Caption: Embryo at 26 days after fertilisation, computer-generated image from a micro-MRI scan. At this stage the embryo measures 4 millimetres in length. The embryo acquires a C-shaped curvature as the spinal cord (faint yellow line) begins to develop. The segment-like structures along the embryo's back (right) are somites, which eventually develop into bone and muscle. The eye and the ear, which appear as slight indentations in the head region (top left), have begun to form. The valves and septa are also forming in the growing heart (darker red, centre left).
