Caption: Gentoo penguin preparing to dive into the sea. Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) are easily recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of their heads. They are the fastest underwater swimming penguins, reaching speeds of 36 kilometres per hour. Photographed on the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, in January.
