Caption: Embryo at 48 days after fertilisation, computer-generated image from a micro-MRI scan. At this stage the embryo measures 16 millimetres in length. The embryo's limbs now have digital rays, which are seen in the hand (centre) and foot (bottom) plates. The upper limbs develop earlier than the lower limbs, but the hands have not yet formed separated fingers as this does not take place until around the 56th week of development. The groove-like structure on the left of the head is the developing external ear, and the red structure at lower right is the umbilical cord.
