Caption: Antarctic surveying. Researcher using a snow micropen (SMP) to study layers (strata) of snow. An SMP can measure both the pressure at its tip and the displacement it causes in the surrounding snow. This helps researchers to build up an accurate idea of the composition and density of the different layers of snow. Researchers in regions such as the Arctic, use snowmobiles (upper right) to cover large distances more easily. Photographed in Antarctica.
