Caption: Concordia research station. Tower at the Concordia research station, Antarctica, used in astronomical observations. The tower was originally built by the Americans to validate satellite measurements, but it is currently used by astrophysicists. The Concordia Research station was built at a location called Dome C on the Antarctic Plateau. At this location, the transparency of the atmosphere, high percentage of cloud-free time, low infrared sky emission, and low aerosol and dust content of the atmosphere, allows clear observation of stars and other celestial objects.
