Caption: Metal phosphate precipitates. Solutions of different salts are added to test tubes containing a solution of sodium phosphate (Na3PO4). All solutions are 0.5 M concentration. Metal phosphate precipitates are formed as a result, left to right: magnesium phosphate (Mg3(PO4)2), zinc phosphate (Zn3(PO4)2), copper phosphate (Cu3(PO4)2), iron phosphate (Fe3(PO4)2); cobalt phosphate (Co3(PO4)2), nickel phosphate (Ni3(PO4)2), silver phosphate (Ag3PO4), and aluminium phosphate (AlPO4). The respective reactions are: MgCl2 + Na3PO4 -> Mg3(PO4)2 + NaCl, ZnSO4 + Na3PO4 -> Zn3(PO4)2 + Na2SO4, CuSO4 + Na3PO4 -> Cu3(PO4)2 + Na2SO4, FeSO4 + Na3PO4 -> Fe3(PO4)2 + Na2SO4, CoCl2 + Na3PO4 -> Co3(PO4)2 + NaCl, NiSO4 + Na3PO4 -> Ni3(PO4)2 + Na2SO4, AgNO3 + Na3PO4 -> Ag3PO4 + NaNO3, Al2(SO4)3 + Na3PO4 -> AlPO4 + Na2SO4. These are examples of a double displacement reaction.
