Caption: Parasitic protozoa erupting from a stomach cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of several merozoites (yellow) of the Cryptosporidium sp. protozoan parasite. The parasite causes a disease called cryptosporidiosis and has a complicated life cycle. Merozoites are the result of asexual reproduction and when released from the stomach or intestinal cells, may repeat asexual reproduction, or may reproduce sexually to form the oocyst stage that passes between hosts in infected faeces. This parasite causes diarrhoea.

Release details: Model release not required. Property release not required.
