Typhoid fever is an intestinal infection caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria in contaminated food or water. Both result in rash and fever, and can cause deadly epidemics if treatment and control measures are not available. Modern treatment is with antibiotics. From Atlas of Venereal and Skin Diseases by Prince Albert Morrow, published in 1889.
