Caption: Leprosy. Historical medical illustration of two cases of leprosy: Fig.1: tubercular leprosy showing macular lesions (flat spots); and Fig.2: tubercular leprosy on the face. Leprosy is a neurological disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. Damage to the nerves can lead to disfiguring skin lesions, deformities, and loss of the extremities. From Atlas of Venereal and Skin Diseases by Prince Albert Morrow, published in 1889.
