Caption: Abiraterone. Molecular model of the drug abiraterone (C24.H31.N.O), which is being tested for use in the treatment of prostate cancer. Atoms are colour-coded spheres (carbon: black, nitrogen: blue, hydrogen: grey, oxygen: red). The prostate is a gland beneath the bladder in men which produces a fluid that forms part of the semen. Elevated blood levels of testosterone may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Abiraterone blocks the production of testosterone by inhibiting an enzyme involved in its formation. This leads to the death of the cancerous cells.
