Caption: Fibre optics manufacturing. View through green welder's glasses of an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source being used to heat a glass rod. The temperature at the centre of the plasma field can reach 10,000 degrees Celsius. This turns silica particles to glass of a very high quality, and increases the diameter of the rod. After further treatment, the rod will be stretched out to form optical fibres. Optical fibres are thin glass wires, and consist of a glass core and an outer glass cladding. Total internal reflection of light at the core/cladding boundary allows data to be transmitted over long distances with little information loss. Photographed in France.
