Caption: Fibre optics manufacturing. Optical fibre, in a late stage of production, being passed through an ultraviolet furnace at speed. In the process, an acrylic resin buffer layer is deposited on the optical fibre. A further plastic layer may be added. These layers do not contribute to the fibre's optical properties. Optical fibres are thin glass wires, and consist of a glass core and an outer glass cladding. Total internal reflection of light at the core/cladding boundary allows data to be transmitted over long distances with little information loss. Photographed in France.
