Caption: ExoMars spacecraft microbiology testing. Microbiology sampling from the interior of Schiaparelli, the ExoMars Demonstrator Module (EDM) lander, in the clean tent at the launch site. The sampling ensures that the entry, descent and landing module meets the strict limits for microbiological contamination that are set for planetary protection. Schiaparelli was designed to test landing technologies for the follow-on ExoMars rover (2018). Unfortunately contact was lost during its descent to the Martian surface. Telemetry data indicates the thrusters switched off prematurely, and the craft crash-landed from a height of several kilometres on 19 October 2016.
