Caption: Rohypnol. Molecular model of the tranquilliser drug flunitrazepam (marketed as Rohypnol). Rohypnol belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which are used to treat insomnia. It promotes sleep by increasing the amount of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which inhibits nerve and brain activity. Rohypnol has also gained notoriety as a date rape drug. Atoms are represented as rods and are colour-coded; carbon (orange), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (pink) and fluorine (yellow).
