Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Laboratory fermentation. Researchers working with a fermentation unit. The fermentation unit provides optimal growing conditions for a culture of micro-organisms. The unit provides nutrients, removes waste products and maintains an optimal temperature for reproduction. The micro-organisms being cultured have usually been genetically modified to produce a product they would not normally make. Such products can include antibodies, human hormones and enzymes. Photographed at Ingenza, an industrial biotechnology company founded in 2002 and based at the Roslin BioCentre, Edinburgh, Scotland.
