Caption: Luca Bottura (born 1961) Italian nuclear engineer at CERN. Bottura is the Head of CERN's Superconductor and Devices Section. CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, is located on the Swiss-French border near Geneva. Superconducting magnets are used in the particle accelerators at CERN, which are massive underground rings many kilometres across. Particles are accelerated and collided at high speeds, producing new particles that are examined with large detectors. The magnets are used to control, contain and direct the particle beams. Many of the key discoveries in particle physics have been made at CERN. Photographed in November 2014.
