Caption: Quartz, silicon oxide, is one of the most abundant and ubiquitous minerals in the earth's crust. It is the primary constituent of beach sand and occurs in many colors, all of which are used as gemstones. One of the most popular is so-called smoky quartz, which varies in hue from a light tan color to a dark chocolate brown. This stone is from Brazil (the major locality) and weighs about 20 carats.
