Caption: Magnetite is a common iron oxide that is found in many beach sands and orebodies. The mineral is nonmagnetic, except for a unique variety called lodestone that has acquired natural magnetism within the earth. This material was undoubtedly the original source of magnets such as were used by mariners in previous centuries.
