Caption: Sugilite is complex lithium silicate, colored purple or violet by a varying content of manganese. The material is extremely rare except in a single locality, a manganese mine near Kuruman in South Africa, where tons of massive sugilite are associated with the orebodies. Sugilite makes an attractive gem material, and the finest grades are highly translucent. It has been marketed under various trade names, including Royal Lavulite.
