Caption: Magnetite, iron oxide, is one of the most common and ubiquitous of all minerals and is a major constituent of beach sands throughout the world. It is always black, and occurs as masses, disseminated grains, huge beds, and also as distinct crystals that almost always display an octahedral shape. These are sometimes bright and lustrous, such as the superb crystals from Binnenthal, Switzerland.
