Caption: Pyrope is magnesium aluminum silicate and a member of the garnet family. It is a frequent component of metamorphic rocks, where it occurs as embedded grains and rounded crystals. Pyrope is distinctive among garnets for its intense red color. Crystals tend to be rare and, although the material is a popular gemstone, cuttable sizes are generally small. Pyrope jewelry was popular in Victorian times and is widely imitated. The pyrope from Aheim, Norway is a typical metamorphic occurrence.
