Caption: Forensic ballistics test. 3D model of the markings (grooves and ridges) left on a crime scene bullet. The ridge shown here is marked by a scale showing it to be 3.404 millimetres wide. The grooves either side were made on this bullet by its passage through the barrel of the gun that fired it. The measurements of these markings will be compared to markings on a test bullet. This information can be used to identify the type of gun used to fire the bullet, and in some cases to identify the exact gun used.
