This image is part of the sequence Shoulder joint re-surfacing surgery

Caption: Shoulder joint re-surfacing surgery. Image 9 of 11. Close-up of the prosthetic metal 'cap' used to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. This surgery, known as a hemiarthroplasty, provides a new, smooth surface. A pin on the underside of the cap, inserted into the top of the bone, holds the prosthesis in place. For an image of the underside of this prosthesis see C001/4578.
