Caption: Timelapse of nightfall looking over the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, and the ridges of Cerro Pachon and beyond. The CTIO is a complex of several telescopes, the largest being the 4.1-metre Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope. The observatory is located on top of Cerro Tololo, in central Chile, at an altitude of 2207 metres. The exceptionally dry air in the region makes it ideal for infrared observations, the stability of the air grants excellent seeing, and the altitude is above the level at which any mists form.
