Caption: Lesser peachtree borer. Close-up of a lesser peachtree borer (Synanthedon pictipes) on a tree. The larvae of these insects feed in the cambium and inner bark of trees near or just below the soil level, causing deadened areas in the bark. Damage is often first detected as masses of gum containing grass and sawdust exuding from a tree around the base of the trunk. Young trees are often completely girdled and die. Extensively damaged older trees lose vigour and productivity and tree life is generally shortened.
