Caption: E. coli research. Researcher placing an antibacterial edible film into a small dish within a larger dish of spinach leaves inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria. The larger dish is then sealed to evaluate the effectiveness of antibacterial vapours released from the film. E. coli is commonly found in the gut of warm-blooded animals but some strains, such as 0157:H7, can cause serious food poisoning in humans. This research may help prevent the cross-contamination of food with this harmful bacteria.
