Caption: E. coli research. Researcher using a micrometer to examine the growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria cultures in petri dishes containing antibacterial edible film discs. The antibacterial discs (at top) repel E. coli, the bottom two discs are controls. This is being done to study the effectiveness of antibacterial vapours released from the film. E. coli is commonly found in the gut of warm-blooded animals but some strains, such as 0157:H7, can cause serious food poisoning in humans. This research may help prevent the cross-contamination of food with this harmful bacteria.
