Caption: Listeria bacteria on broccoli root hairs. Fluorescent light micrograph of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria showing up as green fluorescence on a recently germinated broccoli plant. The bacteria are mainly associated with the root hairs. The plant was inoculated with the bacteria 3 days prior to this image. This is part of an experiment to study how L. monocytogenes infects plants. Understanding this mechanism could lead to new protective measures against infection. L. monocytogenes, the causative agent of listeriosis, is one of the most virulent food-borne pathogens.
