Caption: Bleached coral. This loss of colour (bleaching) is due to the death of the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that lived in the mineral structure. Previously, these algae gave the coral its colour. Causes of bleaching are thought to include prolonged warming (due to global warming) and sea pollution. Photographed in the south-western part of the Indian Ocean.
