Caption: Bone infection. X-ray of the left foot of a 65 year old diabetic patient, showing osteitis (bone inflammation) of the second toe. There is also a complete absence of the third metatarsal (long, central) bone, resulting in only four toes in total. Osteitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection (osteomyelitis). It causes severe pain in the affected bone, a fever and swelling over the affected area. If antibiotic treatment does not clear up the infection, the affected bones must be removed surgically.
