Caption: Marine ecology research. Scientist collecting samples of Hydra sp., a minute aquatic invertebrate of the phylum Cnidaria, for analysis in a laboratory. These hydra were one of the first signs of life in this region just one month after it had been destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Piton de la Fournaise (French for "peak of the furnace"). Piton de la Fournaise is currently (as of 2009) one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Photographed off the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
