Caption: Bottles of argan oil. This oil is obtained from the seeds of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), and is used for its nutritional, cosmetic and medicinal properties. Various stages in the processing of the nuts to produce the oil are seen across bottom. The nuts (brown) are obtained by stripping off the pith (green). The nuts are then cracked open to obtain the seeds, which are then roasted. The roasted nuts are ground to form a paste, which is squeezed to obtain the oil. The argan tree is endemic to south-western Morocco, and the oil is produced by traditional means by the Berber population in the region. Photographed in Morocco.
