Caption: Herschel Space Observatory construction. Engineer working on electronics for the Herschel Space Observatory. The 3.5-metre-wide mirror is at upper right. This space telescope was built by the European Space Agency (ESA) at the Cannes Mandelieu Space Centre, France. It is scheduled for launch in April 2009. It will be used to study the formation of galaxies and stars, and to investigate the composition of the atmosphere of extrasolar planets, and of interstellar molecular clouds.
