Skeletal muscle, also called voluntary muscle, is the most common of the three types of muscle in the body. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and they produce all the movements of body parts in relation to each other. Unlike smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle is under voluntary control. Skeletal muscle is striated; it has long, thin, multinucleated fibres that have a distinct banding pattern. Skeletal muscle fibres are bound together by connective tissue and communicate with nerves and blood vessels. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
