Caption: Bacteriophage (DNA virus) of Listeria sp., coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The genus Listeria is a Gram-positive, regular, nonsporing, rod prokaryote with flagella. Zoonotic microorganism; domestic mammals, rodents and birds contaminate water, vegetables and cheese, which, if ingested by humans, can cause listeriosis, meningitis, septicaemia, encephalitis, food poisoning and risk of spontaneous abortion in pregnant women. DNA viruses can infect this bacterium. Magnification: x29,520 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
