Osteocyte bone. Non-analysed polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through compact (cortical) bone tissue, showing the haversian systems (osteons) with osteocyte cells arranged in rings around the central haversian canal. Osteocytes are the most commonly found cell in mature bone tissue. The haversian system is the fundamental functional unit of compact bone. Each osteon consists of concentric layers (lamellae) of compact bone tissue surrounding a central (haversian) canal that contains the bone's blood supply. Magnification: x170, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
