Caption: Vitamin K research. Nutritionists performing a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometric (DXA) scan on a volunteer to measure bone mineral density (BMD) as part of a study into the effects and benefits of vitamin K supplements. Vitamin K is a group of vitamins that are needed for the modification of certain proteins within the human body. They play an important role in bone metabolism and blood coagulation. DXA uses two X-ray beams with differing energy levels aimed at the patient's bones. The amount of each ray absorbed by soft tissue is subtracted out, and the BMD is determined from the amount of each beam that is absorbed by bone.
