Caption: Phase Contrast light micrograph (LM) of Light micrograph of red alga tetraspore formation (Rhodochorton sp.). Rhodochorton is a filamentous, red alga that grows in low light levels. It is typically a marine species that grows on submerged rock surfaces (or on other seaweeds) by a small disc of filaments. These root-like filaments give rise to thinner vertical filaments that produce lateral branches near the apex. Asexual reproduction occurs near the tips of the filaments. Seen here are oval-shaped tetrasporangia being produced on short branches that arise from the main vertical filaments. The tetrasporangia divide in to asexual spores, called tetraspores. Magnification: x80 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
