Caption: Global burned areas, satellite map. The map was created using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. Burned area is estimated by detecting rapid changes in visible and infrared surface reflectance. This image shows the global burned areas in the month of August, and is from an animation covering the period between September 2000 and August 2015. The colour-coded values range from areas with a small percentage of burning (blue and green) to areas with a larger percentage (red and orange). The dataset used is part of the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED).
