Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Faecal coliform bacteria from a polluted stream. The presence of faecal coliform bacteria in aquatic environments indicates that the water has been contaminated with the faecal material of man or other animals. At the time of contamination the source water may have been also contaminated by pathogens or disease producing bacteria or viruses which can also exist in faecal material. These bacteria are separated from the total coliform group by their ability to grow at elevated temperatures and are associated only with the faecal material of warm-blooded animals. The most common member is Escherichia coli. Magnification: x1,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
