Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Wood degrading bacterium (Flavobacterium akiainvivens). This bacterium was isolated by Iolani High School student (Hawaii, in Dr. Stuart Donachie's lab) from the Akia shrub (Wilkstroemia sp). Flavobacterium akiainvivens is a newly discovered bacterium (2013) that occurs on the endemic shrub in Hawaii. It is a Gram-negative, rod shaped, non-motile bacterium. Flavobacterium species are found in soil and fresh water in a variety of environments. Several species are known to cause disease in freshwater fish. Nylon-degrading bacteria are a strain of Flavobacterium that are capable of digesting certain by-products of nylon 6. Magnification: x5,335 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
