Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Verrucomicrobium spinosum, prosthecate, enteric prokaryote (bacterium). Unusual bacterium belonging to a new division of bacteria called Verrucomicobia. Found in aquatic habitats and in the gastrointestinal tract of humans They comprise up to 3% of the microbiota of soil. Some members have bacterial tubulin genes. Magnification: x3,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
