Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Escherichia coli, carbapenem resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Escherichia coli (E.coli) is a Gram-negative genus of rod-shaped bacteria in the class Enterobacteriaceae. Enterobacteriaceae are common commensals and infectious bacteria. This strain of E.coli was discovered to be resistant to the carbapenem class of antibiotics. CRE have become resistant to nearly all the antibiotics available and are considered to be 'superbugs'. Almost half of hospital patients who get CRE bloodstream infections die. Hospitals are primary transmission sites for CRE infections. The food industry has been identified as a potential source of antibiotic resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Information is lacking on CRE bacterial transmission from animals to humans but it has been observed in some cases with multi-drug-resistant bacteria.
