Caption: Scintillometer measurements. Meteorologists inspecting a weather station's scintillometer. This device can be used to measure the amount of energy (from sunlight) needed to heat a surface, in this case to produce evaporation of water. This scintillometer is in Nalohou, Benin. The data obtained is being used in the AMMA (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis) project to study the African monsoon season. The monsoon is a seasonal period of heavy rainfall following prevailing winds. In western Africa, it arrives in June.
