Caption: OPAL particle detector. View of part of the OPAL particle detector at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The component seen here is the central detector element, the Jet Chamber. This 4-metre cylinder contains over 20,000 sensing wires. The wires allow very high- resolution detection and identification of particle tracks, particularly useful in quark jet events. Using this detector, OPAL scientists were able to make the first accurate measurements of the quark-gluon coupling strength. OPAL is one of four major experiments on the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider at CERN.
