Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Streptococcus pneumoniae, drug resistant strain (DRSP). Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive, encapsulated, coccus prokaryote. This image is from a drug resistant strain (DRSP) and shows coccoid cells dividing. S. pneumoniae causes (lower respiratory infection) pneumonia and (upper respiratory infections) bronchitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, and otitis media (middle ear infection). It is the main cause of community acquired pneumonia and meningitis in children and the elderly, and of septicaemia in HIV infected persons. Magnification: x8,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
