Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Haemophilus influenzae, coccobacillus prokaryote (dividing); causes meningitis in children, pneumonia, epiglottitis, laryngitis, conjunctivitis, neonatal infection, otitis media (middle ear infection) and sinusitis in adults. This bacterium was mistakenly considered to be the cause of influenza until 1933 when scientists determined that influenza was virus related. Magnification: x16,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
