Caption: Light micrograph (LM) of Caffeine crystals. Caffeine is an alkaloid found naturally in such foods as coffee beans, tea, kola nuts and cacao beans. Caffeine has a characteristic bitter taste. Its main pharmacological properties are: a stimulant action on the central nervous system with psychotropic effects and stimulation of respiration, a stimulation of the heart rate, and a diuretic effect. Caffeine is a drug and consumption leads to pharmacologic tolerance with defined withdrawal symptoms. Magnification: x20 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
