Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Phaeosphaeria microscopica is an ascomycete fungus that is a plant pathogen. P. microscopica causes the fungal plant disease, Microscopica Leaf Spot disease. Shown here are the hyphal filaments of the vegetative stage with newly forming fruiting bodies (sporocarps; ascocarps) at the tips of the hyphae. The developing ascocarp will produce thousands of ascospores (fungal spores). P. microscopica survives as pseudothecia on grass and wheat stubble. The disease occurs under continuous wet periods of 48 hours or more. The symptom on diseased leaves is yellow-brown blotches. P. microscopica is especially destructive in wheat fields. Magnification: x585 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
