Caption: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mould (Epicoccum nigrum) hyphae, conidiophores and conidia (spores). Epicoccum nigrum, also known as Epicoccum purpurascens, is commonly found in the air, soil and decaying foods. It is also found in some animals and textile products. It is a plant pathogen and the causative agent of plant leaf spots. Epicoccum nigrum has recently been discovered to be allergen. It has also been shown to have antifungal and antibacterial properties. Magnification: x300 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
